“Tent City” gives homeless people in Las Cruces a place to live, and with an extension they won’t shut down at the end of the month.
The area where “tent city” is set up is not zoned for camping. The city council decided the camp can stay up while they are in the process of rezoning.
Community of hope says this is a way to keep the homeless off the streets and out of trouble.
“It’s something that affects all of the residents, and if they weren’t able to be here and if we didn’t have city support then homeless people would be back in the ditches. They’d be back sleeping out at the Rio Grande and in places where it’s illegal,” said Community of Hope official Nicole Martinez.
Community of hope is asking for donations such as sleeping bags, tents and other camping supplies as well as money to keep “Tent City” up and running.
